Cartoons from Romania

This week the Cartoonists Rights Network South East Europe shares with CER the work of two cartoonists from Romania. The mission of the Cartoonists Rights Network is the protection of cartoonists from any form of human or civil rights abuses.

Anton Dragos

Born in Bucharest in 1947, Anton Dragos started drawing cartoons in 1967. He is a member of the Romanian Artists Union, and his work has been featured at 90 national and international exhibitions, including ones in Belgium, Berlin, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, Italy, Poland, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.

Dragos's work has captured critical acclaim as well, with 20 prizes and mentions under his belt. His work is featured in the collective albums Clean-Dirty (1974) and Fun from Fun (1986) as well as the private pocket albums Look out for Accidents (1981) and Don't Forget (the) Umbrella (1982). His other accomplishments include book illustration, and calendar and poster design.

Leonte Nastase

Leonte Nastase was born in Caciulesi, Dolj, and went on to study at the Nicolae Grigorescu Academy of Fine Art in Bucharest. He has proven his artistic prowess by winning awards at various international exhibitions, including ones in Istanbul, Turkey (1978), Akzehir, Turkey (1979), Skopje, Macedonia (1980), Gabrovo, Bulgaria (1981), and Moscow (1983). Nastase's work is also on display in the modern art museum in Basel, Switzerland.

The first CRN organization was established in the US seven years ago by Dr Robert Russell, who leads Cartoonist Rights Network International. CRN promotes friendship and solidarity between all cartoonists worldwide, with the goal of protecting the integrity of freedom of speech for editorial cartoonists.

The Cartoonists Rights Network South East Europe (CRN/SEE) currently represents seven countries: Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Turkey and Yugoslavia. CRN's director, Nicolae Ionita, is looking to take on more members throughout all of Central and Eastern Europe.
